Hatha Yoga on Zoom

Pre-register by paying $10 per person in advance (and be sure to include your email address)! You’ll be sent a link to the Zoom class scheduled for Saturday at 10am once you’ve paid. The Zoom platform will enable us to see and hear each other, thus allowing me to support you more fully in your practice, and perhaps help us feel more connected.

You can pay by clicking the picture above (you’ll be able to use PayPal or a regular credit card), or you can Venmo me $10 @Ann-MacMullan. Be sure to include your current email address.

The classes I’ve taken on Zoom so far have been great, but you should make sure you set up a little early so you can adjust your camera and audio if you want to be seen and heard. I’ll be there to help you the best I can. I’m asking that you pay $10 in advance, and then I will send you the link to our session and info on how to join.

During our session, I may not be modeling poses as much as I have been on YouTube so that I can talk you through your poses. I’m looking forward to practicing with you! Please let me know if you have questions.

Class description: Learn basic yoga asanas to improve strength, balance and flexibility while focusing on the thread of the breath that “yokes” the mind and body together. “Ha” means sun and “Tha” means moon – together, Hatha is the modern practice of yoga as we know it. Our Hatha class will take you on a balanced journey through effort and ease with the goal of creating stable foundations that allow us to reach new heights both on and off the mat. For all levels!

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Ann Grace MacMullan is a certified yoga instructor (E-RYT 200) and believes in the healing power of yoga for everyone, no matter what age, level of fitness, or life circumstance. Ann is currently pursuing her E-RYT 500 and C-IAYT, certification in Yoga Therapy. She has been teaching yoga and meditation throughout the Philadelphia area for five years, and teaches yoga and balance classes every semester through Wallingford-Swarthmore Community Classes.

Student Spotlight: Evan

Yogas citta vrtti nirodhah: Yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind. from The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, 1:2.

  • Name: Evan Silverstein
  • Age: 38
  • Length of Practice: 16 years, most active over past two years.
  • Most Gratifying Pose: Triangle
  • Most Challenging Pose: Crescent Moon
  • Pets: 3 Dogs, Sweet Potato (Beagle Mix) 14, Rosie (Poodle Mix) 12 & Tina (Poodle Mix) 7.
  • Favorite Philly Bike Excursion: Schuylkill River Trail

Curiosity

Improvising a triangle variation to build strength, flexibility and self-awareness

Evan was one of the first curious souls to join our Men’s Yoga class here in South Philly. He brings a sense of fearlessness to his practice, constantly setting new goals for himself and exploring ways to integrate yoga and mindfulness into his everyday activities at work, home and everywhere in between.

Determination

Evan building core strength while flying high in a variation of Locust Pose

Evan brings a quiet intensity to his practice, exemplifying the yogic metaphor of heating the iron in order to shape it. I admire his determination to develop the strength, flexibility and focus needed to find stillness in even the most advanced postures.

Balance

Grounded and focused in Extended Hand to Toe Pose

Evan demonstrates a quiet confidence moving into challenging poses and holding them while focused on his breathing. Evan enters AND exits these postures with the same degree of grace and focus, remaining centered and grounded.

Present Moment Awareness

Evan reflecting on how to pay closer attention to his breath, both on and off the mat.

Our Men’s Yoga class focuses on building the core strength needed to keep doing all the things in life we love doing. We break down traditional yoga postures into basic physical movements that can be applied to our everyday work-life routines. Evan exemplifies this integration of mindful movement into our everyday activities at work, home and everywhere in between. It is perhaps his present moment awareness that makes Evan such an inspiring student. He follows his breath through each posture and then applies what he learns on the mat to reach his full potential off the mat. I cannot wait to take his class when he completes his teacher training!

Student Spotlight: Carol

We feel really strongly that yoga is for everybody, and yet the images of people doing yoga don’t tend to represent our own bodies or those we teach. So we decided to start a new blog series highlighting our own students, in an effort to shine light on regular people doing yoga and what that might look like. Plus, we wanted to learn more about our wonderful students outside of the classroom! Our first spotlight is on Carol, who was kind enough to come into our home so that we could get to know her a little better. Carol is so motivated and consistent in her practice, she inspires all of us to show up!

C is for Carol and Consistency

  • Name: Carol
  • Age: 68
  • How Long Practicing Yoga: 4 years consistently, 20 years sporadically
  • Favorite Pose: So many feel good!
  • Most Challenging Pose: Boat Pose
  • Sun Sign: Pisces
  • Pets: 2 cats, Diva and Misty
  • Favorite Sweet Treat: Dried Fruit
Carol holds her plank pose for 2 minutes every day!

I first met Carol L. in the fall of 2017 while teaching a Hatha Yoga series run by the Wallingford-Swarthmore Community Classes organization. Since then, she has attended roughly 115 yoga classes with me and a few workshops!!

“Compared to most other exercises, yoga is the best for allowing you to move at your own pace and accepting your limitations. It gives the best benefits without stressing joints and muscles. And it helps with self acceptance.”

-Carol L.

Carol gets to the mat about 5 hours a week and on top of that, logs a lot of miles on her treadmill for cardio.

“Yoga just makes me happy. Even thinking about doing yoga makes me happy. I’m more flexible, stronger and my balance has improved. I also have reduced much of my stiffness and back pain. I experience sciatica much less often, and when it does come on, it lasts a much shorter time.   My balance has improved.

-Carol L.

See you soon on the mat, Carol! Stay tuned for more Student Spotlights!

“I have been a grateful student in Ann’s yoga classes for a couple of years. As an older yoga practitioner who has worked with other teachers in the past, I have especially appreciated her non-judgmental and very encouraging approach. Her classes offer increasing challenges for students to stretch their bodies and their repertoire of yoga poses, but always in a compassionate, supportive, and peaceful atmosphere. In addition, her subtle humor and intention to connect personally with her students makes practicing yoga just plain fun. As Ann expands her teaching opportunities, I hope to follow her for as long as I can move my body!” -Judy S.

Registration Now Open for Spring Yoga and Balance Classes through WSCC

Spring registration is now open for Wallingford Swarthmore Community Classes. Each of the classes I’m teaching spans eight weeks, starting in the first week of March, and since classes typically fill up fast and often have waiting lists, try to secure your spot.

WSCC is a non-profit organization that provides a range of adult classes at a low cost in community venues. I feel lucky to be one of their teachers in the place where I grew up, where most of my family still lives, and where I do most of my teaching. I have met some extraordinary souls (some of whom I already knew, or went to high school with their kids!) and each venue brings its own set of community-minded folks to the mix.

Gentle Yoga meets on Tuesdays at 9:00am at the Wallingford Presbyterian Church, beginning on March 5th through April 23rd. This venue is exceptional for its beautiful Fellowship Hall with hardwood floors and stained glass windows, and its feeling of sanctuary for all kinds. Our largest class, you’ll find an age range from twenties and thirties all the way into the eighties! The sessions are accessible for all levels, and blocks and straps are provided to help deepen and achieve poses. “Gentle” refers to an attitude of taking exquisite care of ourselves in each moment throughout the class. Sign up through the WSCC website: https://www.wscclasses.org/events/39-gentle-yoga/ CLASS IS NOW FULL / PUT YOUR NAME ON THE WAITING LIST

Balance 101 meets on Thursdays at 1:00pm at Swarthmore United Methodist Church, beginning on March 7th through April 25th. At SUMC, our carpeted room is stocked with comfortable straight-backed chairs and a quiet environment for us to explore the challenges of balance. Growing older does not have to mean a loss in balance! This class will deepen our understanding of the intricate balance system and our own personal balance point, which will be measured throughout the eight weeks. Exercises are aimed at bringing awareness to posture, breathing, as well as strengthening and stretching muscles used for balance. You’ll try new seated stretching to incorporate into your everyday routine, the flamingo pose (standing on one leg,) which if practiced regularly, is said to reduce the risk of falling! We’ll even tackle hand-eye coordination with ball-handling, and when the time is right, walk the “balance beam.” Sign up through the WSCC website: https://www.wscclasses.org/events/40-balance-101/

Hatha Yoga meets on Thursdays at 6:30pm at Strath Haven High School, beginning on March 7th through May 2nd, with no class on April 18th. This class meets on the 4th floor in an open hallway, and the temperatures run warm so dress in layers that allow you to breathe. SHHS is my alma mater, many moons ago, so I feel wonderfully blessed to return to the halls I once walked as a rebellious teenager. Not so much has really changed, you’ll find, and we will explore a range of postures that challenge our bodies and minds. Whatever your age or level of fitness, you’re welcome to join this accessible yoga class with a real group spirit. Come practice with strangers and leave as friends!
